Coping with the Effects of Cyclone Nargis
Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar on May 2-3, 2008 and in its devastation left almost 150,000 dead and thousands more injured or missing. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, FXB responded by providing survivors with HIV treatment, healthcare, and water.
Since then, FXB has continued to work to help stabilize the well-being of children, families, and communities in the affected regions through a number of relief and rebuilding initiatives. The results of these initiatives to-date include:
- 300 toilets were installed, improving sanitation for 1,200 individual
- 21 water pumps were installed and 29 polluted ponds were cleaned, providing clean water to over 50,000 individual
- Food was distributed to 24,000 individuals
- 25 Child Friendly Spaces were established, providing 4,500 children with educational services
- 360 homes were rebuilt
FXB Myanmar’s sustained support in the wake of the cyclone has enabled numerous families hardest-hit by the storm, poverty, and HIV to rebuild their lives and ensure well-being.
